A new video perfectly explains why having ‘preferences‘ on gay dating apps is racist.

Produced by MTV Decoded and guest hosted by Dylan Marron, the video explains why writing ‘Only into white guys’ on your dating profile is actually structural racism.

Marron explains: ‘Racial “preferences” are shaped by learned values.’

He then says: ‘When you’re judging a person based solely on their racial background, you’re acting on generalizations you’ve learned to associate with that person’s appearance or heritage.

‘We’re not born with preconceived notions about race. We actually learn how to define what is attractive from those around us,’ he says.

He then explains Western beauty standards glorify white people.

Marron says sexual discrimination is linked to racial stereotypes rather than inherent preferences.

A study conducted last year found racism is a huge problem in the gay community.

Over 850 black, white, Asian, South Asian, Arab, and mixed race gay men participated in the survey.

It found that 80% of black men, 79% of Asian men, 75% of South Asian men, 64% of mixed race men and 100% of Arab men have experienced some form of racism in the LGBTI community.

It also found gay dating apps are one of the worst places for racism within the LGBTI community. This then includes harmful stereotypes and fetishization.
