The original Naked palette by Urban Decay
Cosmetic brand Urban Decay has announced the discontinuation of its iconic Naked eyeshadow palette.
Naked’s history
The original Naked palette received a cult following since its 2010 release. It was the winner Allure’s Best of Beauty and Reader’s Choice awards. The popularity of the 12-shade palette led to six additional iterations of it: Naked2, Naked3, Naked Smoky, Naked Basics, Naked2 Basics, and Naked Heat.
On the creation of the Naked palette, Urban Decay co-founder and creative director Wende Zomnir says:
‘The idea for it came from my product development director guy and I. We were sitting around and were like well, if you had to take four eyeshadow shades to a desert island, what would those eyeshadow shades be? And we threw them on the table and they actually made a beautiful palette. We sort of threw them all out there and there it was. And that’s really where the idea came from.’
Discontinuation announcement
On the discontinuation of the beloved palette, Urban Decay released the following statement:
‘Today, the beauty world mourns Urban Decay’s beloved Naked Palette, the product that revolutionized neutral eyeshadows. A little bit naughty, often dramatic, and always in the press, the innovative game-changer and category creator will be laid to rest after eight years, without a smudge of regret. Passionate Naked collectors — and pretty much anyone with eyes — will remember Naked as the beauty product that changed their lids forever. It was beautiful and mythical and millions of superfans, from misfits to moms to models, will miss Naked from Virgin to Gunmetal.’
‘Saying goodbye to Naked is extremely bittersweet,’ Zomnir said. ‘It was a big moment in our history. It’s a little painful to leave your past behind, but it’s also essential to always evolve. I will forever miss Naked, but we plan to turn the grief into even more greatness. Urban Decay will continue to thrive in Naked’s memory and honor — just wait and see.’

I feel like every girl who loves makeup is somehow personally victimized by @UrbanDecay discontinuing the original Naked palette. I almost want to buy a new one to show my daughter in 10 years what kicked off the start to kick ass makeup! #RIPNakedPalette

Today, we mourn our beloved original @UrbanDecay Naked Palette which will be laid to rest after 8 years. I for one am feeling much like the palette… Dark, a little horny, & unapologetically dramatic. Until we meet again. 🖤🥀 pic.twitter.com/RFVSSxhPWZ
