Actress and queer woman Cynthia Nixon has lost her bid to become the Democratic nominee for the New York gubernatorial race.
Nixon ran against incumbent governor Andrew Cuomo who will now contest the mid-term election in November.
Cuomo won 65.6% of the overall votes, with Nixon winning 34.4% of votes in the state.
The Sex and the City star ran as more left-wing alternative to Cuomo and promised to make changes on the environment and women’s rights. She also campaigned on ensuring housing affordability and to stop US President Donald Trump’s forced deportation of families.
She said that she had hope for a different outcome, she believed her campaign changed New York’s political landscape.
‘While the result tonight wasn’t what we had hoped for, I’m not discouraged. I’m inspired. I hope you are too. We have fundamentally changed the political landscape in this state,’ Nixon wrote on Twitter.

Both candidates had last minute endorsements from major celebrities,including Girls’ creator Lena Dunham who threw her support behind Nixon.
Feuding rappers Cardi B and Nicki Minaj continued their disagreement, endorsing different candidates.
Bronx-raised Cardi B backed Nixon in an Instagram post urging people to vote with an accompanying photo of Nixon.
Just the beginning
Nixon has yet to confirm what she plans to do now her campaign has finished, but hinted she might keep trying her hand at politics.
‘Thank you all for believing and fighting and leaving it all on the field. We started something here in New York, and it doesn’t end today. This is just the beginning. And I know that together, we will win this fight,’ she wrote on Twitter.
