Creators of Emmy award winning show, Modern Family, are planning on killing off one of the major characters in the 10th season of the show.

Modern Family’s 10th season starts in a few months with many speculating it might the final run of the beloved US sitcom.

The show’s co-creator, Christopher Lloyd, confirmed one of its main characters would die this season.

‘We’re handling some bigger life events in this season,’ he told EW.

‘We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.’

Lloyd wouldn’t confirm exactly which character was set to die, but did say it was a ‘significant character’.

But he did promise the death would ‘be a moving event — and an event that has repercussions across several episodes’.

Modern family changing the game

Modern Family is based on the Pritchett family headed by patriarch, Jay. It’s a mockumentary style show that follows Jay’s family and the families of his two children. The show made waves for featuring a gay couple – Mitchell and Cameron – who adopted a child from Vietnam.

The show has been a commercial success for network ABC, winning a swag of awards including 22 Emmys.

According to Lloyd the show will continue after its 10th season. He said this season will feature a ‘significant change in the dynamics of the family that people maybe thought was going to happen at some point down the line that is happening sooner than expected’.

Fingers crossed, Mitch and Cam are kept safe.
