A new report revealed the startingly statistic that 4 in 5 transgender teens have attempted suicide over a 36-month period in the United States.

The American Academy of Pediatrics released the report, Transgender Adolescent Suicide Behavior, this month.

Authors Russell B. ToomeyAmy K. Syvertsen, and Maura Shramko wrote their objective was to understand suicidal behavior in 6 gender identities among youth. Overall, they looked at: transgender male-to-female, transgender female-to-male, non-binary, questioning, cisgender female, and cisgender male.

They used data from the Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors survey. This survey gave the information of 617 teens from the ages of 11 to 19.

In their report, the authors took information from June 2012 to May 2015.

What did they find?

In their findings, there appeared a large discrepancy among gender identity and suicide attempts.

During their time period of data, 50.8% of transgender female-to-male identifying people reported attempted suicide. This was the highest number among all groups.

Next, 41.8% of non-binary people and 29.9% of transgender male-to-female identifying people reported it.

For the two transgender groups combined, that is 80.7% of all transgender teens during this time. Reduced even further, it means 4 in 5 trans teen who were surveyed attempted suicide from June 2012 to May 2015.

Finally, 27.9% of questioning teens, 17.6% of cisgender females, and 9.8% of cisgender males reported attempts.

‘These harrowing statistics lay bare the urgency of building welcoming and safe communities for LGBTQ young people, particularly for transgender youth,’ said the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Director of Children, Youth and Families Program Ellen Kahn in response to the study.

‘The distressing reality reflected in this study is preventable, and our nation’s schools, political leaders and communities can take concrete steps to combat this epidemic.’
