Transgender people in Australia and especially, Sydney will soon be able to access a wide range of legal advice.
The not for profit Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) along with multinational law firm, Dentons, will launch a pilot of Australia’s first Transgender Legal Service.
ICLC has provided free advice to vulnerable people for almost 30 years. ICLC has long been recognised as an award-winning statewide practice that specialises in LGBTIQ matters.
Opening on 10 September the centre will be dedicated to providing transgender clients with support and free advice on legal issues relating to their transgender status.
The Australian first centre will provide services to people who identify as transgender or their families in the case of young people who are transitioning.
‘Our new Transgender Legal Service will assist transgender people with their very unique legal needs, from changing name and gender on official documents, to support in opposing employment discrimination,’ said ICLC direction, Vicki Harding.
‘With the assistance of Dentons, ICLC is now well-placed to ensure transgender people receive the long-overdue targeted support they need.’
The service will run every Monday from 2pm.
The legal issues that the service will provide advice on will include:
- Fines
- Employment
- Special Medical Procedure applications to the Family Court of Australia
- Discrimination
- Assistance in regard to drafting wills, power of attorney, enduring guardianship
- Divorce, separation and parenting
- Name and gender change advice/services
- Criminal and Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) advice and representation for especially vulnerable transgender clients on a low income
