A black woman says that a CVS manager called the cops on her Friday (13 July) for using a ‘fraudulent’ coupon.
Camilla Hudson was at the chain drugstore on North Broadway in Chicago when the incident occurred.
‘So, THIS just happened: I had the police called on me for attempting to use a coupon @ the CVS Pharmacy located at 6150 N. Broadway in Chicago!’ she said in a viral Facebook post in which she documented the exchange.
Hudson further added she received the coupon in the mail and the managers claimed it was ‘fraudulent’.
The interaction became agitated, with the managers telling Hudson to leave the store and ultimately calling the police.
While speaking on the phone to the police, one of the managers, Morry Matson, shaking, describes Hudson as African-American, to which she says: ‘I’m black. Black isn’t a bad word.’
Hudson further added that three police officers came and spoke with her before she left the store.
Consequences for these actions
Matson is the president of Log Cabin Republicans of Illinois. They are a group of Republicans working within the party to help advance LGBTI rights and defenders of Donald Trump.
Matson was also a state delegate for Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election and is running for 48th Ward alderman.
One of his campaign promises is an increased police presence in the area.
According to USA Today, CVS apologized for the incident and fired the two employees involved.
‘CVS Health does not tolerate any practices that discriminate against any customer and we are committed to maintaining a welcoming and diverse environment in our stores,’ CVS’ spokesperson Mike DeAngelis said.
‘We have firm non-discrimination policies in place to help ensure that all customers are treated with respect and dignity. Profiling or any other type of discriminatory behavior is strictly prohibited.’
