Wave goodbye to Pride month 2017 by learning the history of these Pride icons

Artist and Illustrator, Lukee Thornhill, has been celebrating Pride Month with a unique series of portraits to celebrate the icons who made Pride – and what it stands for – possible.

Today is the last official day of Pride month, but we know we should take pride in who we are every day of the year – and none of us know this better than the people who fought for it.

Although we have a long way to go in the fight for equal rights, take a moment to sneak a glimpse into the history of those whose journeys got us to where we are today.

Who knows, maybe one day you will join them?

Earlier this week, YouTube celebrated Pride month with their annual #ProudToBe video.

It’s Pride month, so I see no better way to celebrate but by giving shout outs to Queer heroes. Some of them you may know of and others (like todays) you may not know. Feel free to suggest your Queer heroes. . Long before Stonewall, out and proud lesbian Barbara Gittings was in the streets fighting to secure rights for Queer people. She is credited with leading the successful movement to change psychiatric and psychological professions’ view on homosexuality as a mental pathology. Matt Foreman, the then executive director of the @TheTaskForce said, “What do we owe Barbara? #30DaysOfPride 03/30: James Baldwin was an African-American gay writer born in 1924. His second novel, “Giovanni’s Room” (1956) deals explicitly with homosexuality. It was published at a time when very few writers dared to publish gay-themed works. Michael Ondaatje once famously said, “If Van Gogh was out 19th-century artist-saint, James Baldwin is our 20th-century one.”. #30DaysOfPride 04/30: Born to English nobility as Laura Maud Dillon, Laurence Michael Dillion courageously resolved to live life as his true self. According to Australia’s Gender Centre, Dillon was the world’s first transgender man to undergo gender-affirmation surgery. But doing so cost him his family, his claim to peerage (a noble title), and a career in medicine. Nevertheless, seeking truth led Dillon to become a (presumably) spiritually enlighten Buddhist month and author of two books about spirituality. #30DaysOfPride 05/30: Miss Major, is a trans woman activist and community leader for transgender rights, with a particular focus on women of colour. She serves as the Executive Director of the Transgender GenderVariant Intersex Justice Project, which aims to assist transgender persons who are disproportionately incarcerated under the prison-industrial complex. She has participated in activism for a wide range of causes throughout her lifetime, including the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City. #30DaysOfPride 06/30: To many, @GeorgehTakei will be remembered as Mr Sulu on Star Trek but to others, he will be known as a Queer activist that uses his sass and wit to speak out against inequality. Takei came out as gay in 2005, in response to then-California Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger’s veto of California’s same-sex marriage bill. Takei revealed that he had been with his now-husband, Brad Altman, for many years, and that his friends in Hollywood had known he was gay but stayed silent for fear of jeopardising Takei’s career. Since then he’s been a great voice for the Queer community, he started “Equality Trek” which was a tour about his experience coming out and he’s also received the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Aware. “Hate never wins out in the end. #30DaysOfPride 08/30: Today Britain has to make a big choice… so it’s only fitting I talk about this Labour member. Angela Eagle came out a matter of weeks after Tony Blair was elected, and her frank interview in The Observer was a special moment in lesbian history in the UK, she was also the second woman to come out in Parliament after Maureen Colquhoun (who I will talk about in the future). #30DaysOfPride 09/30: Chances are you’ve not heard of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs so here’s a little bit of information on just why you definitely need to know about him. . “In the second half of the 19th century, in the big scientific and classifying drive of that period, the concept of homosexuality had just been defined, giving a name to what had so far not really been named and allowing discrimination. In this difficult context, Ulrichs, a respected doctor, not only was one of the first to come out publicly but he actually became one of the first (if not THE first) to advocate “gay rights”. He wrote books and made speeches on the subject. He also supported women’s rights. #30DaysOfPride 10/30: Justin Fashanu was a trail-blazer. He was Britain’s first million pound black footballer, and the first (and only) professional player in Britain to come out as gay whilst still playing the game. Justin faced both homophobia and racism on the pitch from rival teams fans, and reportedly wasn’t supported by his own clubs, colleagues and family when coming out as gay – causing him difficulties in playing the game, and off the pitch. After moving to the USA for a number of years, Justin was found dead in London. He sadly took his own life in a disused garage lock in Shoreditch, East London, about a mile away from where he had been born in Hackney. His last words, in a suicide note, were “I hope the Jesus I love welcomes me home.”. #30DaysOfPride 11/30: @owenjones84 is a fellow Sheffielder who’s writing you will have probably seen floating around the internet. Jones is an author, political columnist and Queer activist. He has proven to be a fiercely outspoken campaigner for the Queer community, especially last year after the Orlando Pulse nightclub attack. #30DaysOfPride 13/30: Alan Turing was an English computer scientist and mathematician (among other specialities) and is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science. During the Second World War, Turing played a key role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis. Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for homosexual acts, when sex between men was illegal in the UK. He accepted chemical castration treatment as an alternative to prison. After this awful experience, he went back to his academic pursuits until his death, from cyanide poisoning in 1954. An inquest determined this was suicide but it is said that the evidence is also consistent with accidental poisoning. In 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for “the appalling way he was treated.” Queen Elizabeth II granted him a posthumous pardon in 2013. #30DaysOfPride 14/30: @LaverneCox has been noted by her LGBT peers, and many others, for being a trailblazer for the transgender community, and has won numerous awards for her activist approach in spreading awareness. #30DaysOfPride 15/30: Bessie Smith is regarded as one of the greatest jazz singers of all time. Born into poverty, she rose to prominence under the tutelage of Ma Rainey and was signed by Columbia Records in 1923. Through multiple tours and booming record sales, Smith became the highest-paid black entertainer of her day. She was also bisexual, something she didn’t care to hide. In fact, one of her hits, “It’s Dirty But Good” includes lyrics alluding to lesbian sex. Many believe Smith had a relationship with Rainey, who mentored her stage persona. Smith’s second husband, Jack Gee, was often angered by her trysts with women, including chorus girl Lillian Simpson and fellow singer Gertrude Sanders. #30DaysOfPride 16/30: Gladys Bentley was a blues singer during the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s/30s. She would appear onstage as an openly lesbian drag king. “Differing from the traditional male impersonator, or drag king, in the popular theatre, Gladys Bentley did not try to ‘pass’ as a man, nor did she playfully try to deceive her audience into believing she was biologically male. #30DaysOfPride 17/30: @WillYoungOfficial was the winner of the first ever Pop Idol show, way back in 2002. His double A-sided debut single “Anything Is Possible” / “Evergreen” was released two weeks after the show’s finale and became the fastest-selling debut single in the UK. Young also came in fifth place in World Idol performing his single “Light My Fire”. In March 2002, Young publicly came out as gay, pre-empting a tabloid newspaper from outing him (because you know, ‘reporters’ feel they have the right to out someone). He also stated that he had never hidden it and was comfortable with his sexual orientation. . Since coming out at the age of 21, Young says he has suffered “17 years of shame”. . He said: “I will keep coming back to shame because it’s such a fundamental thing. . “Until I conquered it I just kept having sex to fill the void, watching porn, shopping, anything, and I think we are told that as soon as we come out everything will be OK, but it’s just not the case.” . “It is different being a young LGBT person because if you are heterosexual you are not dealing with a huge backlog of sexual shame and shame of your identity.” It’s super important that the gay community openly talk about these issues because so many suffer in silence and don’t get the help they need. #30DaysOfPride 18/30: Leonard Matlovich was a Vietnam veteran and a Purple Heart and Bronze Star recipient. In 1975, he became the first service member to out himself to the military and fight their ban on gays. He fought hard to stay in the United States Air Force after coming out and became a national sensation, landing the cover of @Time Magazine. His headstone does not bear his name; it reads simply “A Gay Vietnam Veteran.” The words “Never Again” and “Never Forget” are chiselled beneath two triangles. #30DaysOfPride 19/30: “Being gay is not a sin,” LGBT rights activist Matthew Vines continuously states. This 26 year old is on a mission and it’s not exactly one of those missionary works that the Christian faith is used to. Vines took a leave of absence from studying at Harvard University to study the Bible and homosexuality. His hopes are to see the inclusion of LGBT in Christian communities. He has spoken to churches and congregations, preaching his point of view on the gay debate. One of his speeches was filmed, posted on YouTube and attained over 400,000 views in a short time span. #30DaysOfPride 20/30: #KeithHaring was one of the most influential visual artists of the late 20th century. Haring felt that art should not be a precious commodity accessible only to the privileged. He went on from his subway chalk drawings to place his images and sculpture in public places throughout the world. After Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, he established the Keith Haring Foundation to provide funding to AIDS organisations and children’s programs. Near the end of his life, Haring used his imagery to promote AIDS activism and awareness. He sadly died of AIDS-related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990. #30DaysOfPride 21/30: Since coming out in 2014 at the @HumanRightsCampaign, @EllenPage, in seeking to aid her LGBT community, has taken anything but the Hollywood conformist route. Her confrontation with Ted Cruz made headlines, as did her role as a real-life lesbian in Freeheld, which she co-produced. She can be seen in @Viceland’s queer-themed reality series #Gaycation and the dramedy Tallulah, co-starring Zachary Quinto. #30DaysOfPride 22/30:  @MTV viewers met Pedro Zamora, a vibrant and charming AIDS activist, during MTV’s Real World: San Francisco, the third season of the network’s groundbreaking reality show. The Cuban ex-pat tested HIV positive at 17 and devoted his life to education and research of the virus that causes AIDS. For a generation of viewers, he was the first and only person they knew living with AIDS and was a part of the first same-sex commitment ceremony ever shown on television, with his partner Sean Sasser. His story caught the attention and admiration of President Clinton who said of Pedro, “Now no one in America can say they have never known someone who is living with AIDS.” Zamora passed away in 1994 at 22. #30DaysOfPride 23/30: Harvey Milk’s name is synonymous with fighting for change from within the American political system. Being one of the nation’s first openly gay elected officials, Milk was the standard-bearer of what during his time was called the gay liberation movement. Before he was assassinated in 1978, along with San Francisco Mayor George Mascone, Milk helped stave off a conservative backlash against LGBT equality in the form of the so-called Briggs Initiative, which would have barred gay people from teaching in California’s public schools. Milk’s outsize personality and the circumstances of his death have inspired a documentary, a feature film, an opera, and more, and given him a special place in the collective LGBT memory. #30DaysOfPride 24/30: Born RuPaul Andre Charles the world’s most famous drag queen got his start with a punk-rock band in Atlanta, eventually making his way into the NYC nightlife scene and was voted by club owners, promoters and DJs “Queen of Manhattan 1990.” RuPaul’s career skyrocketed around this time after his hit single “Supermodel” went mainstream in 1993. He soon landed a cameo in The B-52’s “Love Shack” music video, a spokesperson gig for M.A.C. Cosmetics, his own self-titled talk and variety show, “The RuPaul Show,” on VH1 and continued to make albums and published books. Furthermore, RuPaul was arguably the first drag queen to make his way into the homes of middle America and helped bring massive visibility to the LGBT community years before Ellen DeGeneres and others. Now Ru is more visible than ever, mentoring America’s next drag superstar hopefuls in the hit show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” on @LogoTV. #30DaysOfPride 25/30: Marsha “Pay it No Mind” Johnson was a Greenwich Village artists from the 1960s to 1990s. Her legacy is grounded in her compassion for the trans community and her dedication to LGBT visibility and equality. Marsha worked alongside Sylvia Rivera, co-founding the organisation Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries (STAR) and the STAR House to provide resources to and advocate for disadvantaged young trans women and drag queens. Marsha was one of the numerous trans advocates involved in the Stonewall riots of 1969. Despite such contribution to the historic events, many gay groups of the era excluded the trans community from their efforts, which left Marsha both frustrated with the state of the movement and further determined to work on behalf of her trans peers. #30DaysOfPride 26/30: As the impossibly sexy and charismatic frontman of British rock band Queen, Freddie Mercury helped sell over 300 million records worldwide, with hits including Bohemian Rhapsody and Radio Gaga. Despite his numerous, widely-reported relationships with men and women in the 70s and 80s, Freddie rarely addressed his sexuality publicly. Instead, he playfully alluded to his queerness with his flamboyant, high-camp stage antics (not to mention by looking fabulous in a PVC miniskirt in the video for ‘I Want To Break Free’). His ambiguity only added to his star power. . Freddie lost his life to AIDS-related causes on November 24, 1991, at the age of 45 – shortly after making his condition public. His untimely death marked a turning point in the public’s perception of the disease. Freddie’s bandmates set up the AIDS charity Mercury Phoenix Trustin his memory. #30DaysOfPride 27/30: Jonathan Larson who wrote the musical RENT has remained an inspiration to me. The show so unabashedly telling the varying stories of several gay characters was the first exposure I and many people I know, had to a loving, accepting celebratory depiction of gay characters- but more importantly- all kinds of love. Gay or straight, the resounding messages of love and acceptance in No day but today are universally inspiring. In so many situations throughout my life I have found hope in Larson’s words and songs. Sadly he never lived to see the impact his masterpiece would have. #30DaysOfPride 28/30: In 1952, novelist Patricia Highsmith published the novel The Price of Salt — the inspiration behind the highly-anticipated lesbian drama “Carol,” starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. The Price of Salt was a landmark book for queer America, offering readers a powerful and hopeful ending, one that didn’t see the two women at the center of the story end their affair, commit suicide, or attempt murder.. Also included in her body work are the famous novels Strangers on a Train, which later became an Alfred Hitchcock film, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. #30DaysOfPride 29/30:  David Bowie was a singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. He is among the best-selling recording artists in the world.  Bowie first splashed onto the music charts in 1969 with “Space Oddity.” The song became one of his best known and among three of his recordings to be included in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. Bowie went on to experiment with a variety of musical styles that came to define him as an innovator.
