90s indie movies queen Chloë Sevigny will star as a famous Victorian murderer in this new spine-chilling period drama.
The American actress will play the titular role in Lizzie and share an on-screen secret lesbian relationship with Kristen Stewart.
Lizzie, directed by Craig Macneill, is the re-telling of the terrifying story of Lizzie Borden, accused of axe-murdering her mother and step-father in 1892 and later acquitted.
The movie will analyze the reasons behind the double murder which shocked the quiet town of Fall River, Massachusetts.
Kristen Stewart plays the housemaid in love with Lizzie
Kristen Stewart, who recently secured the role of one of the new three Charlie’s Angels in the upcoming reboot, will portray the family’s housemaid Bridget Sullivan. She was probably in the house at the time of the murders.
Sullivan was also rumored to be Borden’s lover. Notably, the secret relationship between the two will be addressed more explicitly in this new film.
In the trailer for the film, in fact, the couple shares a passionate kiss. The trailer also suggests Bridget was raped by Lizzie’s step-father, making this the reason for the killings.
The American fascination for Lizzie Borden
The disturbing story of Lizzie Borden still fascinates Americans and tourists. There is even a Lizzie Borden B&B for those who want to spend the night in the actual room where the murders took place.
The original location, apparently, was too small to shoot the movie, so the crew decided to recreate the mansion in Savannah, Georgia.
Before the cameras started rolling, Sevigny and the crew held a seance in the austere film set.
‘The frigid air came in,’ Sevigny recalled to VICE at Sundance last year.
‘There was some communicating with [Lizzie Borden’s father, Andrew Jennings]. It was terrifying,’ she also said.
Furthermore, she added: ‘The first night, I was there with an ex-boyfriend who’s a pretty practical guy, and he got really terrified in the middle of the night. He felt a presence pushing down on him. On all three occasions I’ve been there, it’s been unnerving.’
