Madonna performs during the Confessions tour

This year’s Met Gala was Catholic themed, so who better to perform that Queen of Pop Madonna?

The yearly fashion exhibit was themed Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

Never one to shy away from a religious reference, the superstar stunned with a surprise performance.

Fittingly, she opened her set with Like A Prayer and also performed a chilling cover of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

But she also couldn’t resist the opportunity to show off new music.

Rumored to be called either Magic or Beautiful Game, it fit in with the religious themes of the performance.

Dark-tinged pop, it calls to mind both her recent ballads on Rebel Heart as well as the atmospheric production from Ray of Light.

The material girl wowed the red carpet in a regal black Jean Paul Gaultier gown paired with a black net veil over her face held in place by jeweled crosses and rosaries. Her blonde hair was parted down the center and two braids flanked her face.

LGBTI visibility at Met Gala

That wasn’t the only moment that will wow LGBTI fans.

Emmy-award winning writer, Lena Waithe, perhaps made the biggest statement of the night. She turned up to the red carpet draped in a rainbow colored cape to represent the LGBTI community.

Given the Catholic Church’s often homophobic stance towards LGBTI people, Waithe confidently backed her community with the stunning cape.
