A gay couple from Columbus, Ohio are accusing a postal worker of harassing them and calling them a homophobic slur.

Tuesday (7 August) night, Michael Coward and his fiancé, Michael Vaughn, left their home to go to a dinner party. As they left, Coward picked up their mail and was allegedly and suddenly confronted by the postal worker, who was delivering mail at the time.

‘I started arguing with her and she called me a [expletive],’ Coward said. He further added she reacted negatively to them and was annoyed he didn’t wait until she was finished to get his mail.

‘And then she just kept going on and on and on about me and my fiance being white [expletive],’ he continued.

He caught part of the exchange on video, which can be seen at WBNS-TV.

Though the postal worker never says the slur in the video, when Coward confronts her about the word, she responds: ‘I called you what you are.’

It didn’t end there, however.

Coward said then the postal worker took their names off their mailbox. He commented: ‘You’re telling us that you’re not going to deliver our mail because we’re quote, end quote “White [expletives]”? I don’t think that’s how that works.’

United States Postal Service responds

The United States Postal Service (USPS) issued a statement about the interaction.

‘The allegations made against a Postal Service employee are very concerning,’ it said.

‘These actions – if true – are not consistent with and don’t represent the values of the Postal Service organization and will not be tolerated. You can be assured that this alleged incident is being fully investigated and that the Postal Service will take whatever action is appropriate.’
