Lee Lin Chin, who presented the news on Australia’s SBS channel, has resigned after almost 40 years with the company.
Chin, who developed an almost cult following, mysteriously hinted at the reasons for her sudden departure.
Speaking to ABC network’s Ten Daily show, Chin said there were several ‘small to medium-sized reasons’ for her resignation, but would not elaborate.
‘There’s not one big reason, there’s many small to medium-sized reasons, which for the time being I wish to keep to myself but may talk about one day,’ she said.
Talented journalist with sense of humour
She then joked that one reason was that ‘working two days a week didn’t give me enough time to devote to the pub and re-reading the complete works of Shakespeare. So now that I work zero days that issue has been addressed.’
Chin began her career at the channel as a translator, but then progressed to become one of the news show’s most loved presenters.
SBS released a statement calling her ‘one of Australia’s most recognisable and respected newsreaders’.
She has more than 227,000 followers on Twitter and is famous for her sharp, witty and often random comments.
Chin was a keen supporter of marriage equality in Australia. Even here, she injected humour into the issue. Last year she posted on Twitter: ‘People keep asking me if I support marriage equality. Seriously, look at me? Is that even something you need to ask?’
The media personality hilariously assured fans that although she’d resigned from her job, she was not retiring: ‘I have not retired, simply resigned. Retirement is death’.
Whatever she does next, we wish her the best of luck. In the meantime, here are some of her other funniest and most sexually ambivalent tweets and video moments:
