Bisexual author Roxane Gay might be the writer of DC Comics’ upcoming Batgirl movie.

How did this happen?

On Thursday 22 February, Joss Whedon announced his exit from the film project, saying he didn’t have a story for it.

After this announcement, Gay took to Twitter to state that she’d be very happy writing the movie in Whedon’s place.

‘Hey DC Comics I can write your Batgirl movie, no prob,’ the author wrote.

Michele Wells, Vice President of Warner Brothers and DC Comics, was quick to respond to Gay’s Tweet.

‘If you’re serious, contact me,’ Wells wrote, providing her email address.

‘Yes I am serious. I will email you,’ Gay replied.

Roxane Gay wrote the World of Wakanda comic series for Marvel, alongside fellow author Ta-Nehisi Coates. She also co-wrote the screen adaptation of her novel, An Untamed State.

Gay is best known for her collection of essays titled Bad Feminist, which was released in 2014.

Fan Reactions

Fans on Twitter were ecstatic upon hearing this news.

But of course, there have been think pieces springing up about how Gay ‘probably won’t’ end up doing the movie. And her response to that is priceless:

‘Because I have google alerts I’ve seen a number of articles that say “Roxane Gay probably won’t write a Batgirl movie.” That may be true but I’m allowed to be ambitious and aim for the top. Men do it all. The. Time.’
