RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Katya ends hiatus: ‘The bitch is back’

Written by gaytourism

The performer behind Katya, from RuPaul’s Drag Race, has ended his hiatus.

Brian McCook, his real name, announced in January he was taking a break from drag.

The beloved star of season 7, All Stars 2, and the Trixie and Katya Show canceled all filming and performances in 2018.

But today, moments ago, he tweeted again.

With an image of Catwoman, he wrote: ‘The Bitch is Back’.

It is unknown as of yet how soon he will be back in public life.

McCook has previously opened up about struggling with staying sober from drugs and alcohol.

‘I’m telling you this with a sense of urgency. I’m not dying. Let me tell you the truth. I’m not dying, I want to live,’ in an open letter said entirely in French, he said on Instagram Live.

‘I’m a drug addict, but I’m sober. Today, and yesterday. And before. But I need to take a vacation, because I want to survive like Gloria Gaynor.’

During the live video, he said why he was taking a break from drag: ‘I’m a language student first, an artist second, a drag queen third. Health is the most important thing for me.’

He added: ‘I need to take a vacation because I’m tired, I’m exhausted, my brain doesn’t work anymore, because of the drugs, because of all the gigs, I believe you will understand.

‘We’ll see, and I wish you a good day. Bye bye.’

Support from other queens

Many of his Drag Race queens supported him, including Trixie Mattel and Pearl from season 7.

Winner Violet Chacki told Gay Star News last week: ‘I talk to Katya at least once a week, sometimes more. She’s doing very well. She’s taking a break, resting.’

She continues: ’I’ve been saying no to a lot of stuff this year. I think a lot of girls are at the point where we’re like: “OK. We need to start saying no to things and taking breaks and taking care of ourselves.” I think Katya is a good example of that.’
