Salma Hayek has slammed Barbie for turning late bisexual icon Frida Kahlo into a plastic doll.

Late artist Kahlo appears in plastic for the first time alongside bisexual boxer Nicola Adams.

They are part of a new range the toymaker brought out to mark International Women’s Day on Tuesday 8 March.

Despite much praise for the line, one person wasn’t impressed. Salma, of course, played Frida in the Oscar-nominated 2001 biopic of the same name.

‘She celebrated her uniqueness’

Taking to Instagram, Salma complained: ‘fridakahlo never tried to be or look like anyone else. She celebrated her uniqueness.’

She furthermore continued: ‘How could they turn her into a Barbie’ along with the hashtag ‘#body image’ [sic] and thumbs down emojis.

Some have also criticized the doll for leaving out Frida’s most defining physical characteristic. The artist was known for rocking a monobrow throughout most of her professional life.

When Nicola’s Barbie was first revealed, the star said in a statement: ‘Without my own role models, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Growing up, my biggest role models were my mum and Muhammad Ali – there were no female boxers in media when I was a kid, and I might have discovered my passion sooner if I’d seen other women boxing.’

She furthermore added: ‘That’s why empowering the next generation of kids is something I’m passionate about. It’s great to work with Barbie to share my story now.’
