An upcoming Elton John biopic has found its star to play the legendary British singer. Kingsman actor Taron Egerton is set to take on the role in the movie Rocketman.
Paramount Pictures is nearing a deal for the film, according to Variety.
Dexter Fletcher is directing the project. Fletcher is also the person who replaced Bryan Singer on the Freddie Mercury and Queen film, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Lee Hill is writing the project, which will follow John’s emergence at the Royal Academy of Music and his path to stardom. It will also explore his partnership with songwriting collaborator Bernie Taupin.
John, who recently announced his retirement after a final world tour, has earned five Grammy Awards, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Tony Award.
A previous connection
This is not the first link between Egerton and John.
In last year’s sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, John had a funny and surprisingly long-lasting cameo. He even appeared in some scenes with Egerton.
Matthew Vaughn, who directed both Kingsman films, is producing Rocketman with his Marv Films shingle.
And before you question Egerton’s singing abilities, he already lent his voice to the animated musical movie Sing.
