Director Jim Fall announced the news that he’s working on a sequel to the 1999 gay romantic comedy Trick.

He made the announcement on Facebook last Thursday (2 August), along with a teaser poster for the sequel. Along with lots of exclamation points, Fall said the movie is being planned for next year, which also happens to be the 20th anniversary of the original movie.

The original movie starred  Christian Campbell, John Paul Pitoc and Tori Spelling. It first premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, before its theatrical release in July.

The movie follows Gabriel (Campbell), an aspiring Broadway composer, and Mark (Pitoc), a go-go dancer, and their adventures in trying both to get laid and explore their relationship.

As with all rom-coms, there are multiple ups and downs, as well as a sweet happy ending.

Numerous critics compared the film’s aesthetic and tone to that of Doris Day-era stories.

It won two awards, first the Siegessäule Special Jury Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival and then the Special Programming Committee Award at Outfest. It was also nominated at Sundance and for the Satellite Awards.

In 2012, Fall brought up the idea of a Trick sequel in an interview.

‘Both  Jason Schafer, the writer, and I agree that it didn’t work out with those two. They’re not really right for each other,’ he said of revisiting the story.

He continued: ‘I think in the sequel what we want to explore is the fact that the two boys are then going to meet 12 years later and have grown up and are now actually going to meet again, and this time really kind of fall in love because the [original] movie isn’t about falling in love.’

It is unclear if the sequel now will follow the same path.
