Emirates Airlines is gay friendly according to San Francisco law

Written by gaytourism

Connect to new experiences and cultures in over 150 destinations worldwide, Dubai based Emirates Airline is one of the most progressive international airlines and operates daily A380 nonstop flights from Dubai to San Francisco.

Joe D’Alessandro, CEO of the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau (SFCVB) was a speaker at the Community Marketing & Insights 18th Conference on LGBT Tourism & Hospitality at the Park Central Hotel in San Francisco earlier this month.

According to Joe, San Francisco has been known as the city that practically invented gay.

In San Francisco, it shows. Any airline flying to San Francisco International Airport has to sign a contract prohibiting discrimination.

This is required under the San Francisco City Contracting Provision Section 1801. This section deals with the Nondiscrimination Ordinance. It mandates Airlines flying to San Francisco International Airport to comply to not discriminate: “In the performance of this agreement, airline agrees not to discriminate against any employee, city employee working  with airline, applicant for employment with airline, or against any person seeking accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges, services in all business, social, or other establishments or organizations, on the basis of the fact of perception of a person’s race, color, creed, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, height, weight, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, domestic partner status, maritial status, disability or AIDS or HIV status, or association with members of such protected classes, or in retailiation for opposituin against such clases.

This is very different in other parts of the world. For example in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates homosexual acts are illegal under UAE law and can incur a jail term and fines.

eTN asked Emirates how they comply with the San Francisco ordinance and received this response from a spokesperson:

“As a multicultural global company, Emirates does not discriminate against people of any race, religion or sexual orientation. We are a proud employer of people across more than 130 nationalities, and diversity is a foundation of our brand.

Emirates adheres to the anti-discrimination employment laws of each country it operates in. Emirates does not ask prospective employees about their sexual orientation during any stage of recruitment and does not keep data on employees’ sexual orientation.”
