A New Orleans resident has become the seventh trans woman to have been killed in the US this year.

The body of Amia Tyrae Berryman, 28, was found at 1.15am yesterday morning at the Shades Motel on Airline Highway, Baton Rouge. Berryman had gunshot injuries. The local coroner confirmed to GSN that an autopsy will be performed later today.

Hotel staff have told police Berryman was a guest at the hotel and had checked in for the night.

Local news outlets mis-gendered the victim, but her death has been mourned by online LGBTI activists and bloggers.

GSN has contacted Baton Rouge police for further details.

It’s believed 2017 was the deadliest year on record for trans murders in the US. A HRC report released November identified 25 trans murders in the US in the previous 11 months. Trans women of color are disproportionately the victims of attack.
